What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is the name given to a type of brain damage that affects motor skills. This damage occurs before, during, or shortly following birth, and usually lasts a lifetime.

The three main types of cerebral palsy are:

  • Spastic cerebral palsy – stiff limbs and difficulty moving them
  • Ataxic cerebral palsy – lack of balance and depth perception, difficulty walking
  • Athetoid cerebral palsy – uncontrolled, involuntary, and abnormal movements

Your child may have many common signs of cerebral palsy, including intellectual disabilities and missed milestones.

Other signs and symptoms may include:

  • Over- or underdeveloped muscle tone
  • Abnormal reflexes
  • Limited control and coordination
  • Problems with oral motor skills like breathing, eating, etc.

There is no cure currently for cerebral palsy, but there are several treatments, including surgery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medication that can improve comfort and control. An experienced attorney can help you recover compensation to help pay for these unexpected medical expenses.
